Introduction to Stage Management with Ryan Tate

Do you want to learn how to be a Stage Manager? Then join us for a half-day workshop led by industry professional Ryan Tate.

This workshop will focus on:

  • The role of a Stage Manager: what they do day-to-day, how they fit into a theatrical company and what their function is in rehearsals and performances
  • What preparation is involved leading up to performances
  • What is needed to create a great Stage Manager. How working closely with cast, crew, directors and designers we facilitate and help create the finished theatrical production.
  • There will be discussion about what is needed and expected of a Stage Manager during performances and how they are a key figure in bringing together all elements of the production to make it look seamless and professional

Who can attend: 

  • Participants do not need stage management experience, but an understanding of the theatre will be helpful (community groups, high school, tertiary and professionals all welcome)
  • Participants must be aged 16 or over

Complimentary morning tea will be provided.

Cast & Creatives


Ryan has over 18 years’ experience in company, event and stage management on a variety of large-scale musical and touring productions in Australia and worldwide. Graduating from the University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies) and Bachelor of Creative Arts (Theatre) as well as an Advanced Diploma in Stage Management. Currently working as Company Manager on the Australian tour of Gaslight (Newtheatricals), other company management credits include Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Victorian Opera) at the Sydney Opera House and tours of La Cage Aux Folles (Showtune Productions Hayes Theatre Co), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (TML Enterpises) and Muriel’s Wedding The Musical (Global Creatures).

In 2022, Ryan finished work as Senior Stage Manager on Dubai 2020 Expo. An international event spanning six months, working with Expo Daily Entertainment where they showcased around 200 shows daily from across the globe, on multiple stages across the Expo site. Other stage management highlights include Blackie Blackie Brown (STC), Hot Shoe Shuffle (DAE Global), Cabaret The Musical (Showtune Productions), Taming of the Shrew (Bell Shakespeare), HAIR (Cameron Mackintosh UK) and Strictly Ballroom The Musical (Global Creatures).

Ryan has been Production Manager at Hayes Theatre Co. on High Fidelity and Cabaret The Musical and also Venue Coordinator, as part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies, where his team assisted in delivering each of the ground breaking and successful ceremonies for London 2012, under the direction of Danny Boyle.
